The Ministry of Power is an Indian Government Ministry. The ministry is charged with overseeing electricity production and infrastructure development, including generation, transmission, and delivery, as well as maintenance projects. India faces challenges in electrical supply and delivery, and is often unable to meet demand, even in very large cities. The ministry acts as a liaison between the central government and state electricity operations, as well as with the private sector. The ministry also oversees rural electrification projects. There are vast provisions for billings with regards to supply of electricity for various purposes such as domestic, commercial, agricultural and industrial. Penalty for non-payment of such bills are also different from one another. There are different slabs for billing depending upon the consumption of electricity units.
In view of the above changed scenario, electricity department had set up their own grievance redressal system. To address the power supply related complaints on a proactive basis and provide effective, assured and timely services to the customers several power distribution companies and state electricity boards have also set up Electricity Call Centres. These call centres work round the clock to receive customer complaints through several channels such as telephone, fax, email, etc.
The power ministry, like the police and fire department, has introduced a four-digit helpline number for electricity complaints from all over the country. While the idea is a simple one, the execution will require coordination among power distributors on a pan-India level.1912 – the helpline for all power complaints is now working in areas covered by 44 of the 50 public sector discoms.
The customer complaints are registered and forwarded to the field personnel for timely action and rectification. The status of the complaint is periodically tracked and updated. The customer can know the status of the complaints registered by contacting the call centre personnel. In case the complaint is not resolved within a specified time limit, the complaint is escalated to the notice of higher authorities for expediting the resolution process.
